Overpriced and overimportant

Posted by tigerlily365 on 3/8/2009

The food isn't always horrible. That's the best thing I can say about 7 Gables. Some dishes are good, some are bad. Sometimes, the same dish can vary wildly in quality and taste from one visit to the next. The prices are extremely high for the lower levels of quality and service. In the past (10 or more years ago), the food quality was consistently good, even if it was still pricey. The facility does have a run-down and dated appearance. The restaurant seems to think is a Michelin 3-star in France, when really it's a random, local eatery in a semi-rural suburb.

Absolutely the best steaks and the freshest fish.Try the roast lamb.

I found this gem of a restaurant to be classic yet up to date with flair of the cuisine and the service. My family and I visited and enjoyed many dinners since 1996.

Delicious!!

After reading the last review on this restaurant, I must say, I strongly disagree. I have been there on several diferent occasions, all of which pleased me greatly. My first visit was on my husband's and my anniversary, and it has a fantastic romantic ambience. I ordered the roast lamb chops, which was $30. I have traveled to Paris and London and never have I tasted lamb chops as scrumptious as the one served there. Ordered medium, the meat just fell off the bone (very tender) and had just the right garlic flavor with a hint of rosemary. It was served on top of a lovely brown sauce that complimented it well. It had no mint flavor to it, and I can not see as to how one might interpret it as being that way. My husband ordered the dover sole. It was de-boned right at our table. It's exterior had a crisp golden brown, buttery texture while the inside just steamed when I put my fork into it. What a delectable treat that was! For desert, me and my husband split a creme brulee, which was about the best thing I have ever tasted in my life. My second visit was for a friend of mine's baby shower. We were served a buffet dinner where the choices were Italian Sausage, Keylime Chicken, Tilapia, and Prime Rib. The grilled Italian Sausage was phenomenal! Although I am not a big steak eater, several of my friends stated upon how exceptional the Prime Rib was. I tried the Keylime Chicken and Tilapia both. The Keylime Chicken had a very unique taste and I have never tasted anything quite like it in my life. I presume it is my favorite dish served at the restaurant. Tilapia was outstanding as well. I have not one negative thing so say about this restaurant. It is my favorite, but with my busy schedule, I often don't have time to go as much as I would like too.

Overpriced and Outdated

I usually do not write a review unless I've been somewhere several times, but felt compelled after only one visit to Seven Gables. The restaurant looks like it was decorated by my mother in 1970. The chairs felt like they were last re-sprung about the same time. The menu looked quite promising, though a bit pricey. During my one visit, the 'handmade' Italian sausage was not bad, very spicy and tasted like it had been gilled on an old, hot grill. Serving size was very small, and 'grilled onion' and green pepper, though tasty, were in short supply and had simply been tossed on the grill for a moment as well. Clam Chowder tasted more like a bisque, also not bad but a very small bowl for the price. Lamb chops ($35) were fatty and had a terribly 'lamby' taste. They were served with a scant amount of what seemed to be a slightly minty, slightly jellied version of cheap canned brown gravy. Ribeye Steak Diane ($25) was a poor cut of industrial looking beef, fatty, overcooked, served cool, and covered with a very decent mushroom and peppercorn sauce that seemed to be there not only to provide some flavor to the otherwise lacking meat, but also to cover up the many thick streaks of fat in the meat. Both entrees were served with a small, quartered roasted potato that was dry, a few slices of carrot cooked with sugar, and a few green beans. All were nearly room temperature. Bread was marginally warmed 'Sams Club', and not even their good stuff. Total without drinks or dessert was about $100 for a marginal meal. The menu and prices are on a scale with Cafe Lily in Decatur, or Petite Auberge at Toco Hills, or City Cafe in Fayeteville, but the food quality not even close. In Conyers, Red Tomato is a MUCH better choice. Alternatives would be I Love Sushi for great sushi, or even Jim and Nicks for good, simpler foods.
